Introduction to DMT II: Applying Methods with Clinical Populations

1 credit

This course covers major topics in the field of applied Dance/Movement Therapy, including ways in which methods of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) can be applied clinically with various populations across the lifespan. We explore applications with children, teens, parents & families, geriatrics, treatment of mental illness, and with trauma survivors, addictions and medical diseases. Through readings, we review examples of success in clinical/medical, educational and community settings.

Students will learn about:

  • A variety of ways to apply Dance/Movement Therapy interventions with a range of clinical populations. Specific topics include supporting early development for both able bodied and disabled children/youth, supporting emotional regulation and relational capacity as pertains to recovery from trauma and abuse, addictions and disease treatment, within relationship and family therapy, and for geriatrics.
  • Commonalities and differences in how assessment, goal setting, interventions and the measurement of progress can be applied across different populations given different abilities and needs.
  • How to lead a successful movement experiential, and receive feedback from peers.
